Booking Through Thursday: Numbers Game

For something different, I’m borrowing a question from … here! One of the very first questions ever at Booking Through Thursday. Back from 2005 when Laura owned the blog but, because it was so new, it didn’t get as many responses as it does now … so, why not revisit?

Here’s the question:

Some people read one book at a time. Some people have a number of them on the go at any given time, perhaps a reading in bed book, a breakfast table book, a bathroom book, and so on, which leads me to…

1. Are you currently reading more than one book?
2. If so, how many books are you currently reading?
3. Is this normal for you?
4. Where do you keep your current reads?

This BBT is a little convenient being that I had just taken pictures of my night stand (where I keep my current reads) to share here before reading it. Now on to my answers.

Yes, I am currently reading more than one book. In fact I'm juggling about 8-10 books at the moment. This is the norm for me. I tend to have a very short attention span when it comes to reading and unless a book absolutely grabs me and refuses to let go, I constantly alternate between quite a few at a time. I keep my current reads on my night table. They used to be kept on my dresser but the hubby complained about them taking over entire thing so he bought be a night stand to get them out of his way and closer to me.

Here are a couple of pictures of the books on my night stand.

  1. Oh good! I don't feel so crazy now. lol When I wrote the post for this BTT I realized I had 8 going. I think that's a record for me. http://imlostinbooks.blogspot.com/2009/04/btt-i-am-reading-way-too-many-books.html

  2. I can't read more than 1 book at a time, so I'm mighty impressed by how many you can read simultaneously. :D

  3. Lolol! You've got me beat. I'm only juggling 7 at the moment. I had to chuckle about how you were gifted a night stand ;-) I have a milk crate for a bedside table (not enought room for a real one).

  4. Wow -- 8 to 10! I thought my 2-3 was a lot!

  5. Until recently, I would only read one book at a time -- but then, I never kept a TBR pile either. However, this last year I've accumulated a huge TBR pile and find myself falling behind my self-imposed reading schedule. So, the answer? Read more than one book at a time. I am currently reading approximately 3 books at a time.

The books I choose to read simultaneously are usually different genres, i.e., a Contemp, a Historical Romance, a Fantasy/Sci-Fi. I'll sometimes throw in short stories, or short reads in between -- M/M Erotica, Erotica, PNR.

I read the short stories during my communute and lunch time and leave the other reads as the main course for the evenings.

  6. 1. Are you currently reading more than one book?
I normally only read 1 at a time but if I'm at work and it's super slow then I'll pull up one of my ebook novella's and read that.
    2. If so, how many books are you currently reading?
    Right now, 1.
    3. Is this normal for you?
    Pretty much. :)
    4. Where do you keep your current reads?
I keep it near at all times. lol If I read in bed at night then it goes onto my bedside stand until morning and then when I leave for work I'll take it with me to read at lunchtime. My current read (whatever it is at the time) usually is with me all the time.

  7. Wow, there is no way I could keep track of that many. 2-3 is the most for me.

  8. Thanks everyone for the responses. It's really interesting to see how differently we all read.

Once upon a time, I only read one book at a time, but over the last few months my numbers have gone up little by little until at my peak, I was juggling a whopping ten books. For me, I found that reading this way ups my chances of finishing more books within a month. So it has its advantages.

  9. Oh god! I'm so happy I'm not the only one! I'm reading ten at the moment, but after reading every one else's answer to this question ("only one at a time" or "never more than three"), I was beginning to feel like the odd woman out!

My Cousin Rachel looks great! =D

  11. 8-10!! My memory wouldn't be able to retain so many plotlines at the same time!

  12. I only read one book at a time...I find it fascinating that so many people read several at once.

  13. I generally like to read one at a time but find myself reading more than one quite often. But when I do read more than one they are completely different types of books. That way I don't get confused.

When I was younger I could read lots of books at one time but not any more.

    Mine's up...come on over!

  14. I love seeing pictures of reader's books. I see a few that I've got in my TBR pile.

Right now I've got 4 going ~ PRN, SciFi Romance, a Harlequin and a Contemporary. I don't think I could read say 4 PRN at the same time. Too confusing, gotta mix it up. And I definitely couldn't handle 8-10 at once. :)

  15. I'm currently reading three books, which is NOT the norm for me. I usually only read one at a time. ;)

  16. Nice pics Brie :) I usually read one or two books at a time... unless it's a series and I get curious. But then, I read quickly, so that's why :)

Hmmm, none of the books in your pics are in my TBR pile. Let me know if one of them stands out :D

  17. Seems like I'm a strange reader, but that's not surprising.

Mae, I have no problem remembering plot lines. As soon as I start reading a book after leaving it behind, everything comes back to me.

J.S. Peyton, My cousin Rachel is really good!

Kim, I see how that would be helpful.

Leslie, I love seeing pictures of books, too! People's bookshelves are my favorite. I think that Angie from Angieville has the greatest bookshelf pictures I've ever come across.

Mandi, Christine, and Nath it seems that you all are in the majority with reading one book at a time.

A few of them stand out Nath. I'm posting reviews for all of them at some point, so you will know which ones had a greater impression.
